Cakes
As far as we know from history, it was Alexander the Great, the son of Philippos, who invented the cake. Alexander organised the biggest wedding ceremony, ever known in history, in the Persian Susa. Ten thousand Macedonian men were persuaded, in the royal way, to marry a Persian woman, which means that ten thousand girls and widows became wives to the Macedonian army. Alexander was a very resourceful man in all respects, and he loved pleasing people through surprises.
In the ancient times, soldiers were given a piece of bread (about 60 dkg) as a daily portion. The bread was flat and round, the size of an average cake today, and was made of roughly ground barley, rye or wheat.
On the day of the wedding in Susa, however, the bread was made of honey dough mixed with cereals, almond, walnut and dry fruits, it was cut into two and filled with anis, ewe cheese and honey cream. The top was also decorated with rose petals dipped into honey, as well as with magic symbols made of white, skinned almonds.
This is the true story of today’s cake. 2300 years have passed since then and no one has come up with anything better than that.
Even today, the cake is made of mixed sweet dough, cream, icing and decoration on the top. It should also be mentioned that soldiers in ancient times covered 20-50 km a day with a 40-kg pack to get to the boundaries of the populated areas.
Dear Reader, believe me, whether it be the cake or not, they had no cholesterol problems.
